The Breakthrough

          "The Mathematics of Life" written by Mr. Ian Stewart an Emeritus professor of mathematics and an active researcher at Warwick University in England. All of his writings are huge success and mostly appeared  on papers, one of his brilliant creation is the book entitled "The Mathematics of Life".


           For centuries, mathematics is used in science specifically on the field of biology  to analyze scientific data but in the 19th century the great alliance between biology and mathematics took place also known as Bio-Mathematics. This time mathematics made a breakthrough. Mathematics and mathematical ideas are also a great factor in discovering and achieving understandings.
           The book contains 19 chapters. "The Book of Life" the chapter 8 discussion that focuses on the human genome project and algorithmic challenges of DNA sequencing but chapter 13 made the greatest impact to Mr. Stewart. He considered Alan Turing's groundbreaking proposal about the chemical basis, and sketches the development of biological thought about animal markings. " A spotted animal can have a stripped tail, but a stripped animal cannot have a spotted tail" this is proven by a mathematician James Murray based on the extended Turing's idea with wave system. Turing proposed the "reaction-diffusion" equations to model the creation of patterns on animals during embryonic development. According to Hans Meinhardt in The Algorithmic Beauty of Seashells, the patterns on many seashells match the prediction variation of Turing's equation.

               Biologist have long declined mathematics as being useless  to our understanding of living things. For the past ten years mathematicians have proven them wrong considering that they hold the key to unlock the mysteries of the world. Ian Stewart gave us a great overview of the vital but little-recognized role in unlocking the great secrets of the world and how mathematics will be more vital in the future. Stewart explains the collective efforts of the great mathematicians and biologist on some of the most difficult scientific problems ever including the nature and origin of life in a very entertaining  and less boredom way.
