A Cabinet in the Dark Room (BOOK REVIEW: Professor Stewart’s Cabinet of Mathematical Curiosities)

The book of Mathematical humours and a book of solving the problem of Geometry, Probability and Logic that are not boring to explore and this is what Ian Stewart created, the creation of other face of Mathematics. The 14 year old Ian Stewart explored his curiosities in math, he explored the “cabinet” where the happiest moment in mathematics can be found and then he pull it out all of the interesting and funniest moment in Math ever.

Since we were on our primary level up to this tertiary level, can we remember when, where and how math was taught very interesting and fun? Since we were child the fear of numbers really dominates in our mind. That perspective that I think soon be a phobia. That belief that became hindrance to explore the real fun that we can get in Math; because of that belief we cannot let go because we are wrapped thus afraid of it which is a VERY WRONG thought. Just like Ian Stewart, who had his curiosities, curiosities that gave him the light to find the objects in that dark cabinet; objects that give us the joy and smile as we read the “Cabinet of Mathematical Curiosities”, we should also be curious about what we thought is difficult. Thus reading that book helped me to appreciate the things in Math that honestly speaking, a very serious subject for me. It is a book that brings me up to a realization that Math isn’t that easy yet it is fun and full of wonders, and that is Mathematics.
