Review on The Story of Maths: The Frontiers of Space

In the third installment of The Story of Maths the Frontiers of Space. Professor de Sautoy presented about the development and the mathematicians who contributed to the study of Geometry and Calculus.

On renaissance time, geometry was expressed by a painter in her artwork “The Flagellation of Christ” by using perspectives in doing her paintings. This painter is Pierro dela Franciesca. Later he talked about Rene Descartes, was once a mercenary who left the frontlines to study about algebra and trigonometry. Pierro de Fermat, a mathematician known for mathematical games and puzzle is also talked about.

The famous scientist for the study of motion, speed and gravity Isaac Newton was also featured by Prof. de Sautoy as one of the greatest contributor of calculus. His Rival Gottfried Leibniz is also a great contributor to the development of calculus. This early study on calculus was very hard until Bernoulli made it easier.

Prof. de Sautoy talked about Euler who introduced infinite sums and the symbol “e” and “I”. He also mentioned Gauss which is according to him the greatest mathematician ever. Gauss solved the problem about Imaginary numbers and questioned Euclids Geometry.

He also mentioned about a man with an awesome mathematical talent that was not recognized during his time. This man was Janos Bolyai, he was rejected by Gauss to be his apprentice.
